Chardonnay: How to Serve and Drink It Right

Chardonnay is a grape variety with green skin, commonly used to produce white wine. It may be the only grape variety in a bottle of wine or blended with other grapes to create a particular alcoholic beverage. Many countries grow Chardonnay, including South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Italy, France, and the USA. Wines that consist of Chardonnay grapes include Franciacorta, Champagne, and Chablis. These wines differ significantly based on their taste, production region, and method. Wines prepared from chardonnay should be stored, served, paired, and drunk the right way. Continue reading to learn how best to serve Chardonnay wine.

Storing Chardonnay Wine

Once you open the Chardonnay wine bottle, it can be stored in the fridge for up to two days without ruining its taste. You may also use a wine preserver to increase the longevity of your beverage once it’s opened. Ensure to keep the bottle out of the refrigerator for a while before serving it again. Wait for the drink to reach its optimal serving temperature. Note the room temperature to know how long it would take the bottle to warm up. You may also use a thermometer to check its temperature.

Serving Chardonnay Wine

Ensure to serve chardonnay chilled! Serving the drink too warm would muddle its flavors. On the contrary, if the drink is too cold, its taste and aroma would get muted. The optimum temperature to serve chardonnay is 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit. You can achieve this temperature by keeping the wine bottle in the refrigerator for two hours or placing it in an ice bucket for 30-40 minutes. As mentioned above, you can keep the leftover chardonnay in the fridge for up to two days!

Pairing and Drinking Chardonnay

Unoaked chardonnay can be paired with delicate foods such as chicken, oysters, seafood, and sushi, whereas oaked chardonnay can be enjoyed with flavored foods. These include garlic and spicy foods, smoked fish, pork tenderloin, etc. Remember not to pair oaked chardonnay with delicate foods, for it’s heavier in terms of taste and texture.

The rules for drinking chardonnay are simple. Just follow the general etiquettes, and you’ll be good to go! Avoid warming the beverage with your hand’s warmth by holding the glass by its stem.

Choosing the Right Stemware

Fine, crystal champagne glasses are best to enhance the drink’s taste. Consider crystal clear bowls with thin rims that can hold 10-18 ounces of liquid. The clearer the glass, the better the drink color would appear. Larger goblets allow chardonnay’s flavors and aromas to express and aerate themselves better.

Regardless of the goblet size, the ideal serving size of chardonnay should be 5 ounces. Fill up the glass just below its widest section.
